"Wake up in the morning and say ‘What did I get up for today”…What can I fix today? And find like-minded people and go after that and give it a try."
Edna Adan Ismail on Green Connections Radio
Remember the images of patients being moved out of hospitals in
Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico when they lost power as a result
of the massive hurricanes in 2017? What if that never has to happen
That’s the goal of the ambitious new “50 by 50” initiative by global nonprofit Earth Day Network and ImpactPPA, a decentralized renewable energy platform, to bring renewable energy solutions to 50 healthcare and other facilities that benefit human lives by 2050, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
The first project is installing solar and wind energy in the Edna Adan Esmail Hospital in Somaliand, a 16-yaar old maternity and pediatric hospital that is reducing the high mortality rates for women and children in that country and training a new generation of doctors.
Listen to this fascinating conversation Green Connections Radio host Joan Michelson had with both Edna Ismail, a nurse who retired from a long career with the World Health Organization to build this hospital with her own funds, and Dan Bates, Founder and CEO of ImpactPPA who himself retired from a long career as an audio engineer for film and television to start the renewable energy provider. This interview was conducted at the Earth Day Network 2018 Climate Leadership Gala, where Ismail and Bates were honored for their ground-breaking collaboration.
