"We wanted to create something that would not only impact our community, but the communities around us."

Bria Snell on Green Connections Radio

Before you drink from a school or public water fountain....

At 17 years old, these Washington, DC high school girls won second place in the NASA OSPARC 2018 contest that encouraged students to “Be the Spark” and "find a new purpose for an existing NASA technology."

Listen to Bria Snell and Mikayla Sharieff of Banneker High School describe their water filtration system to purify water in school water fountains -- called "From H2NO to H2O" -- and how they developed it.

You'll be inspired and want to share this with every child and teenager you know (especially girls) - and their teachers and coaches!

You'll hear about:

  • The Inclusive Innovation Incubator (IN3) where they volunteer that helped them develop the idea after their IN3 coach told them about the contest.
  • How they came up with it.
  • Why they chose water filtration.
  • Their poise under pressure, despite the hater-trolls that tried to sabotage the contest results against them because of their race.

You’ll probably also want to listen to:

  • Hayden Araza, Chief Science Officer at Paradise Valley High School (16 years old)
  • Rita Colwell, frmr NSF head, Univ of Maryland, Gulf of Mexico Research chair, water science expert
  • Nayyirah Shariff, Flint, Michigan activist for clean water (on their lead poisoning crisis)
  • Talia Buford, ProPublica reporter covering the Flint, Michigan lead poisoning water crisis.
